Student got surgery after carrying his heavy bag to school everyday

Going to school and learning is very important especially today in this competitive world. If you won’t study hard then it would be hard for you to secure a stable job in the future. It sad but that’s where employers look first before hiring people, their educational background. And that’s what parents and teachers are trying to plant on children’s mind. But there’s nothing wrong with that because no matter what, education is indeed important.
That is why parents send their children to school, with hopes that the kids will absorb all the things they need to learn to prepare for their future. Parents value education in a way that some even hire tutors to supervise and teach their kids. There are others who have the money to send their kids to private schools, and provide them with all the resources they’ll be needing. Resources to further their knowledge such as books.
Textbooks are fundamental resources needed to support the studies of students. It is the number 1 source of information next to the teachers, if not even surpassing the latter. Every subject has its own set of books that will provide the students the information they need. Every year, the books that are used by them changes and increases in number. There might be cases where the books got thicker, hence very difficult to carry. And there lies the problem of having too many textbooks.
It would’ve been better if every student has his own locker in school where he can keep his things including his books. However, that is not always the case, especially in public schools. Every day, students are having a hard time carrying their books to school. Maybe their bags can get a little lighter if they are only carrying books but no, there are still notebooks and other things that is necessary in attending school. Despite that, many teachers require their students to bring their books every day, hence they can’t even leave a single one out even if their backs hurt already. And because education today is dependent on books, it will also be difficult for a student to catch up on class without them.
Carrying a backpack that is loaded with many books and other school supplies is too much for a student as it put too much strain on the back. There are many drawbacks when our backs are put on much stress and that includes distorting the natural curve of our middle and lower backs which, not only causes back pain, strains the spinal column. The shoulders are also in for some pain and even the muscles in these parts of the body are being overworked.
Many researches have been conducted already stating that students, especially those in elementary school are having a hard time carrying their backpacks because of thick and heavy textbooks. Because of this, students even complain that their shoulders and backs are hurting but no matter how much they complain, it won’t change a thing because they still have to carry their books.
According to one research, 64% of the respondents said that they do experience back pain for some time because of the weight they carry on their backs. That is two of every five children attending school. What’s even more alarming is that 21% of these kids experienced such pain for at least six (6) months, that’s more than half of the school year. Meaning, while they are busy learning, their backs are aching hence they can’t really focus on studying.
There was an interview wherein an uncle complained about his nephew who’s attending primary or elementary school, gradually started having bended back and experienced pain. Because of this, the nephew had to undergo surgery at an early age just to fix his back. This is causing distress to many parents, imagine having your child under medical knife just because he was bringing his books to school. This is an eye opener to parents as well as to the teachers. Studying is hard enough, don’t make it harder for the kids by making them carry a heavy school bag.
This article does not suggest that the books be just stored somewhere and not be used, it recommends that the teacher should know the burden of having to carry too much load and the bad effects it has on elementary students. How much is too much, you ask? According to experts, only 20% of a person’s weight shall be carried, it shouldn’t exceed to that or else nothing good will happen. So now, what shall be done? You don’t want to let your child develop back pain at an early age and carry it with him until he grow up, right? If that’s the case then you should follow the following.
There are few things that you can do to lighten your child’s load. For example, when you buy a schoolbag, choose the one with padded shoulders so it’s comfortable when it’s carried. Organize your child’s bag every day. Put the heaviest one closest to the back, and only put what’s needed for the day. Always tell your child to carry his back with both shoulders and not just on one, it will make the bag easier to carry and won’t stress the shoulders too much. Or in lieu of a regular backpack, buy him a rolling backpack or the one with small wheels so they can just pull their bag instead of carrying them. It may not be always the case but there are schools where ramps are available and not just stairs, making it easier for the students to pull their trollies.

Learning is necessary and education is indeed important. But we hope that in the process, children are able to enjoy it and not feel burdened because of the heavy loads they carry each day. For the moms and dads out there, always check how your kids are doing. Ask them if they are having a hard time and do something about it if you can. Because more than all the material things you provide them for school, your support is the most important.
